Taking Up Space

It is so hard living in this world. There seems to be so many taboo topics and practices. But, what does it mean to take up space? Taking up space simply means giving yourself a chance to be unapologetically you. It means showing up for yourself where you are not afraid to be you.

It is so important to know that the world is a better place with you in it and with you fully taking up space to the capacity that you can. We may hear the importance of holding space for others. However, it is so important to be mindful and aware that your capacity to take up space can elicit the way the world interacts with you.

Here are 5 ways to give yourself permission to take up the space you deserve:

  1. Recognize and understand you are deserving- There is nothing that you can do anymore or any less to make you deserving of taking up space. By taking up space you are utilizing your voice.
  2. How would you like someone you love to take up space- There is an intervention or exercise where a therapist may ask you to think of what you would say to a friend or loved one in regard to hard situations. 9 out of 10 times we speak so much more kindly and compassionately to others. Why are we not considering ourselves?
  3. What would taking up space mean for me- Brainstorm and think of ways that taking up space or showing up for yourself would look like. Then proceed.
  4. Hold space for yourself to take up space- Give yourself permission, self-compassion and cultivate the sense of self that is necessary to take the chance on you.
  5. Remind yourself if not now then when- Be aware that life is short and what we do with the dash between our birthdate and final breath is what counts.
