5 Ways to Pick a Support Group

What are support groups? Should I be in one or is it even important?

I think it’s easy to get into the stigma of it all. That you need “help”. When in reality it’s a supportive environment to find healing and get a different perspective.

Here are 5 ways to pick the best support group for you

  1. What is your current struggle? Are you struggling with addiction, grief, loss, having a hard time coming to grips with your mental health diagnoses? Or are you a therapist who needs to process with other people who are therapists.
  2. Would you benefit from one on one discussion or are you open to feedback? The best part about support groups is that it can reveal that deeper work might need to be done with a clinician one on one.
  3. What are your intentions for joining a support group? Are you longing for connection? Support or assistance in resolving a particular issue
  4. Why is it important to you? Why do you want to go?
  5. Give it a chance. Try a group, if it’s not a good fit look for another. Give yourself and others a chance to heal.
